LOW BAG RUN/TACKLING DRILL: For Linemen and Linebackers
By Coach Pete Jenkins, former D-Line Coach at long time high school, college and pro level.
Equipment needed:
- Chute - 6½' H x 8½' L, 6½' W
- (3) Half-round Dummies
- Agility Training Ball
- Tackling Dummy (stand up for Angle Tackling), or Short Hand-held Body Pad for Spin Tackling.
Purpose of the Drill:
Stepping the half-rounds with eyes up, chin up, in good broken- down football position. Simulates D-lineman and Linebackers stepping over bodies on the ground. The chute keeps the player in low football position as he runs the bags. The Ball simulates a Cut Blocker where we emphasize playing the blocker first with his hands, then locating the football.
Angle or Spin Tackle at the end of the drill gives us an opportunity to work on tackling, as we try to end every drill with a tackle. We begin the drill with a snap of the ball working to a hard count situation.
We use this run agility drill once a week, and have seen tremendous improvement from our players.
